Modiano Market
Modiano is one of the most traditional markets of Thessaloniki. It is located in the heart of the city and it has been part of the Thessalonians’ life for about 80 years.
Its construction started in 1922 and finished in 1930 by architect Eli Modiano.
Coming from a renowned Jewish (Sephardic) family of Thessaloniki, Eli was the son of the banker Jacob (Yako) Modiano. He studied architecture in Paris, France and returned to Thessaloniki where he created some of the city’s most important buildings, including the Modiano Market.

Full of life, throughout the day, Athonos Square in the centre of the city is a place loved by, both Thessalonians and tourists alike. Here, food and nutrition plays the leading part. You’ll find spices, all types of tea, nuts, vegetables and fruits, fish, delicatessen products, as well as small boutiques with clothes, handmade accessories, and decoration items. Moreover, your attention will be instantly drawn to the smells of the delicious foods of the Square’s traditional taverns! You can enjoy them both at lunchtime and evening, accompanied occasionally by live greek music. Additionally, in case you want to get acquainted with the traditional side of Athonos Square, visit the picturesque small shops selling handmade wickerwork and small wooden furniture, made by the last remaining skilled craftsmen.

Tasty Walking Tour - come hungry

Our guide Niksos really did his homework checking to make sure he took us to all fresh, handmade bakeries and restaurants and every dish we sampled was top notch! Fresh filo dough rolled by hand for the spanikopita, the bougata was so yummy and every other sweet treat was amazing. Greek coffee was very interesting - not sure if I’ll will give up my morning Nespresso for it but enjoyed it just the same. Very enjoyable tour - highly recommend.
Excellent Walking Food-Sightseeing Tour!

Nikos was a wonderful guide and a local! We met at the White Castle and I was fortunate to be the only person on the tour.
We started off with Coffee and Tea and continued to pasties and small samplings – Nikos planned the tour off great as we were able to walk around Thessaloniki and view the sites and listen to the history of the city. When stopping, we had a nice table and were able to converse and enjoy the food. We ended towards a wonderful Turkish bath building and close to a lovely open market where we were able to sample local fruits and nuts.
I highly recommend this excursion as it is 2 hour tour and really enjoyable to walk with a guide. It was a great break from taking all day excursions and really a nice way to end my visit with the city. Thank you Nikos!
Delicious fun!

Confused tour

This wasn’t really treated as a food tour, it was treated as a market tour. We were asked what we wanted to do many times- I would much rather have a well thought out agenda. I don’t want to design my own tour in a city I don’t know. Overpriced for what you get- 1.5 hrs, a few food tastings.
